Your first job comes with a lot of new things at once: a new EMR, new referral sources and a new caseload. You don't need every gadget. Bring the basics, watch what experienced clinicians reach for, and add from there.
The bag
- Goniometer and reflex hammer. The tools you'll use in nearly every evaluation.
- Gait belt. Even outpatient clinics see patients who need help with transfers.
- Pocket notebook. Write down clinic workflows, codes and colleagues' tips in week one.
- Pocket guide to special tests and outcome measures. Quick review between patients, until it's memory.
- Resistance bands. Practice teaching home exercises before you need them.
- Comfortable shoes and a spare shirt. You'll demonstrate, lift and kneel all day.
- Water and snacks. Your schedule will ramp up faster than you expect.
- Your mentor's name and calendar. The most important thing on this list.
Pro tip
Ask your clinic what it already supplies before you buy anything. And if mentorship isn't scheduled, ask for it. See our questions to ask before you sign.
