Field-side coverage changes the job. You're outdoors or in a gym, often far from the clinic, and you need to assess, tape and decide fast. Follow your team's emergency action plan and your state's scope rules. They decide what belongs in your bag.
The bag
- Copy of the emergency action plan. Know who calls, who meets the ambulance and where the AED is.
- Athletic and kinesiology tape, pre-wrap and scissors. The most-used items on any sideline.
- Elastic wraps and ice bags. Compression and cold for acute injuries.
- Gloves and a small first-aid kit. Cuts and abrasions happen every practice.
- Penlight. For a quick pupil check while you follow the concussion protocol.
- Concussion assessment forms your organization uses. Consistent screening every time.
- Resistance bands and a foam roller. Warm-ups and return-to-play drills.
- Sunscreen, water and a rain layer. You're outside as long as the athletes are.
Pro tip
Before the season, meet the athletic trainer and team physician, if there is one, and agree on who does what. Clear roles save time when it counts.
